It was a sunny morning of May 10, 2002 when a bus stopped at the edge of the Seulingenwald forest in the Ludwigsau-Friedlos district, West Germany. A numerous company of elderly gentlemen got off, with the leading one holding quite a big wreath with blue ribbons before him. All directed towards the nearby monument raised in honor of the airmen perished in a battle fought here September 27, 1944 between Kassel and Gottingen. The battle was fought by American 8th Air Force aircraft and Luftwaffe fighters comprising several Geschwadern to defend the Reich from USAAF four-engined bomber raids. On August 1, 1990, the monument was unveiled at the site where the bomber flown by the American formation commander had fallen, in memory of the 118 American airmen and eighteen German fighter pilots.
